  • What style of martial arts do your books cover?

  • Here's a very Bruce Lee-like answer: "Wrist Locks" covers all styles and no style.

While this book contains joint locks and arm bars from ju jitsu, chin na, aikido, kali, and a few other styles, it really is not style specific.

It doesn't matter whether you want to lock from a grab or after you perform a technique to control an initial attack, the principles are the same.

Similarly, The Punch Papers covers punches from a variety of styles, though it shuns the more inefficient punches. This is another book that goes beyond style.

Secrets of Teaching Martial Arts More Efficiently outlines teaching principles, not styles. Constructing a great lesson, where students learn at a fast pace is not a style specific event.

In fact, so far, none of the books and ebooks is too style specific, in the sense that these books have useful information for all martial artsists.

These books focus on teaching you how.

  • How are your books different from other martial arts books?

Basically, you come to Kerwin Benson Publishing if you want "The Good Stuff."

I hate to say this, but if you have been into the martial arts for any length of time, then you have bought and read some pretty lousy books. You have read books that covered history, but didn't produce the goods. They didn't help you improve as a martial artist.

At the most, they taught you a few basics. Nothing that would really help you in a fight.

Granted, there are some books that are filled with techniques -- some good, some bad -- but the problem is that you don't learn how to really use the techniques. You don't get hints on what to do when something unexpected happens.

Mine aren't the only good books covering practical application of martial arts -- but they are few and far between.

Read and practice Wrist Locks, and you will be able to defend yourself better. Guaranteed -- or your money back. You get the same guarantee with improving your knife fighting with 10 Days..., punching harder and faster with The Punch Papers, and your students will improve at a faster rate, after you apply some of the principles found in Secrets of Teaching Martial Arts More Effectively.

Can other martial arts books offer a similar money-back offer?

  • Can't I find this material in other, cheaper books?

I hope you don't expect me to say yes.

For example, when "Wrist Locks" first appeared in the martial arts stores, it was the only title that dealt specifically with wrist and joint locks.

Since then, two other titles have appeared. One is a video with a very limited number of moves, and even fewer principles, with zero tactics. The other is a book that claims to be the "complete" book on the subject.

What you'll find in that poor attempt is a 42-page book with such sagely advice as "The wrist doesn't like to move backwards. The wrist doesn't like to move side to side."

    I kid you not.

I wrote a book to teach you how to wrist lock effectively. I wrote the kind of book I desperately craved 25+ years ago.

  •

  • Can't I learn all of this from martial arts videos?

Again, the answer is no. I am sad to say, but most of the videos are too style-specific.

You don't learn to generalize to different situations -- different styles -- different needs.

Wrist Locks: From Protecting Yourself to Becoming an Expert teaches you to flow:

    * From one technique to the next

    * In and out of styles

    * From counter to reversal with punches and kicks thrown in at your discretion

No, at the present time, you won't be able to learn this from videos...

But stay tuned. Rumor has it that we'll have a DVD available within a year.

For now, this book covers what you need to control with locks and arm bars.

Whichever subject readers request the most will appear as a DVD first. Tell us your DVD craving.

  •

  • What if I don't understand a martial arts tactic or technique from one of the books?

I am here to answer your questions.

I can help get you unstuck, if that ever happens. Try me. Email me with your question, and we'll work through it together.

I try to answer all my emails -- as fast as is possible and convenient. Keep in mind, I often answer more than 500 martial-arts related emails per week. But I will help, even if it takes me a few days to get back to you.

  •

  • What do you mean when you say you offer a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee?

That's just what it says. You get your money back if you feel you didn't learn anything from one of our books.

Hey, I want you to get something useful from Wrist Locks and all our other books. Take away something practical -- something that will better help you to defend yourself and others. You need to learn something that you will have with you forever.

If you don't pick up a principle -- a tactic -- maybe a killer joint lock -- possibly a great counter or reversal ... a way to punch more effectively, as I said, if you felt you wasted your time, just ask for a prompt and courteous refund.

We are proud of our customer service.

  • Whom do I contact for support?

You may contact me directly, if you'd like.

  • Who is Keith Pascal?

I am a martial arts writer. I have four books in print, two more soon to be releasd, and four more waiting in the hopper.

I also write and edit Martial Arts Mastery: A Tell-All of Tips, Tactics, and Techniques. This weekly newsletter goes out to well over 7,000 subscribers.

If you take the articles published in MAM and combine them with articles published by other sources (The Martial Arts Professional, The Dragon's List, Grandmaster.cc, etc.), I have published 500+ articles in the last four years alone.

Before turning to writing full time, I was a high school teacher for twelve years.

I have studied martial arts since I was six years old. For the last 24 years, most of my adult life, I have been studying a style based on the teachings of Bruce Lee, from a Bruce-Lee original student.

I live in Oregon with my wife Kate, a high school teacher who also teaches martial arts. Together, we are raising our six-year old daughter, Quinn.

Quinn helps us raise our dog, Lucy, and our two cats, Murphy and Stanley.

  •

  • Should I purchase a hardback, a CD-ROM, or a download?

    There are advantages to each.

I love the feel of a hardback. And I like collecting martial arts books on my shelf. I like having a ready reference. I also have a fair number of autographed books. They mean more to me.

With an immediate download, you save a few bucks. Also, it really is immediate. In a few minutes, you'll be learning new locks, and important martial arts principles.

A CD-ROM offers the best of both worlds. It will take a few days to get it to you in the mail, but then you have it in an easy-to-store format.

You view it on your computer, or download it to your portable, and read it on the go.

With a download, you need a little memory for the ebook and the ebonuses. With a CD-ROM, you don't need to save it on your computer. You have it forever.

Ask which books are available in specific formats

  •

  • When will your next title be released in hardback and/or on CD-ROM?

Our next CD -ROM will be out in February, 2005, with another following shortly after.

  •

  • Any clues about the subject of your next book?

For better or worse, we are committed to helping folks defend themselves with and against knives. So, you'll see another knife title, soon.

I am also working on a book that teaches an impressive speed demonstration. This one is a real reputation builder.

  •

  • What is your personal secret to becoming an expert?

    Pick an interest, any interest.

You can become an expert on the subject of your choosing in a relatively short amount of time. The key is reading.

Let's say you were interested in historic quilts. Read a book a week on historic quilts, and in a year, you have read over 50 books on the subject.

There may not even be 50 books on the subject of your choosing. Read articles. Watch programs and tapes. Research the Internet.

Buy the best books for your collection. Buy and download valuable PDFs. Print them out and put them in notebooks or have them comb bound.

Now, imagine that you wanted to improve as a martial artist.
